Groves Karate Studio was started January 2000 at Holiday Island, Arkansas in a small store front location. The school was moved to its current space in July of 2004. The purpose of the school is to provide training in traditional martial arts to individuals and families. The principal emphasis is a hard style of karate called Shorei Ryu with kata being the main vehicle for accomplishing this. The other part of the program is traditional weapons used as farm implements by the Okinawans in the course of their life. These are the bo, tonfa, sai, kama, nunchaku. We also teach self defense through the use of the cane which has been around for centuries. While we do martial arts tournaments, we do not consider the school to be a tournament-oriented school. We believe that anyone can do, and enjoy, the martial arts. We currently have, and have had, students that are handicapped, ADHD, ADD, young, and older. We have single people, couples, and families that attend together. Our youngest student is 4 and the oldest is currently 64 with all ages in between.
